Day In The Life - April 2013

Often photographers end up neglecting the documentation of their own families. Sometimes it can be due to being too busy with client work, or a lack of inspiration, or just not being able to balance everything. This is my 'Day in the Life Project'. I choose one day each month to document, from morning to night, so that each month I am guaranteed photographs of my family and my life.

This past weekend we headed back up to Petaluma to watch the Butter and Egg Day Parade, with friends. The weather was perfect so once the parade had ended we headed out to the beach, where it turns out the weather was less than perfect, windy and foggy. That too was when we realized the bag with layers to keep warm had also been left behind. Oh well, we tried. On our way home, another set of friends invited us over for a little bbq, so it all worked out perfectly, after all.

Day In The Life - March 2013

Today was the last day of the month, but a good one to document. Easter Sunday! We have a communal Easter breakfast at church and it was also my week to teach the preschoolers. Each year after church is the Easter Egg Hunt, a highlight of the kids' year. Then lunch with our pastor's family and some other friends, which lasted well into the afternoon, followed by heading home to start packing for our trip to Texas this week and get ready for bed.

Day In The Life - February 2013

Sometimes life is just so busy, but last weekend we had a pretty unstructured Saturday. While hubby and son took off for karate classes, the girls, with a couple of friends played Legos for hours and then their brother came home and happily joined in. We had to drag them away to get out of the house for an hour. Then my sweet boy made dinner for us all, with just a little help from me. Love these family days. As well as the usual collage I had to sneak in a couple extra of my kids, just because they're such great kids and I love them so much!

Day In The Life - January 2013

I choose one day each month to document, from morning to night, so that each month I am guaranteed photographs of my family and my life.

I may be blogging this late in the month, but it was New Year's Day, the first day of the year that I photographed. It was one of those days that did not go as planned, but turned out great. We had planned on visiting the Exploratorium in San Francisco, on the last day before it's big move down to Pier 15. However, many other people had the same idea and the line was ridiculous. Instead we wandered around the Palace of Fine Arts and then over to the beach, a quick lunch, then back over the bridge to the Bay Area Discovery Museum. As we all started to get hungry again we got a welcome call from friends inviting us over for dinner (an offer we rarely refuse, be warned) and it was the perfect way end our wonderful day, complete with an after-dinner-show put on by the lovely children.

My blog, my rules...so once again my day to document didn't land on the 1st,  instead I chose one of our family days. Saturday, December 8th, was a fun day; we started out with the Christmas Cafe and Children's Store (a seminary event) in the morning, stopped to visit friends and have lunch, then continued our annual tradition of cutting down our Christmas Tree. A couple of years ago we discovered Celesta Farms, in Sebastopol and have never looked back. They are a family run farm, with great prices and we love that as returning customers we get a $5 discount as well as the free coffee, hot chocolate or cider and cookies.

Well October did not go to plan, I was away at the Pursuit 31 Conference on the 1st, my normal day to photograph family life and then I kept remembering part way through a day and it was too late. Before I knew it, it was the 31st, so today was the day, I just scraped in.

September 1st we were away for the weekend. With a husband in school, resources are tight and we are grateful that Jenness Park offers a discount for Seminary students. We had previously visited in the winter and the kids had a blast sledding and playing in the snow, so this was a very different experience. The weather was wonderful and they got to fish and play in the water and kayak, while I caught up on reading for pleasure and did not have to worry about cooking and cleaning (that's what a real vacation is all about). It was only a couple of days, but it was a great way to end our summer.

A Day in the Life - August 2012

August 1st came and went and I completely forgot it was my day to document. Oh well, there are no rules so I just chose another day, which ended up being August 7th, the day after I realized my neglect. My poor husband worked the previous night and came home at 3am that morning, with a toothache. He ended up with an emergency dental appointment and five hours later a (very expensive) root canal! These things cannot be predicted.

July 1st was a Sunday; we headed to church and that Sunday we also went to a Creekside Picnic. My kids love to play in the creek and it's always fun to hang out with friends. These are memories being built and friendships being strengthened. Thanks again to the Burtts for sharing their space with us all!

June 1st was a regular school day, but I then headed out to a Women's Retreat and my husband headed out to take the kids on a mini-camp out.

A Day in the Life - May 2012

I recently read a blog post that totally resonated with me. It was all about how often photographers end up neglecting the documentation of their own families. Sometimes it can be due to being too busy with client work, or a lack of inspiration, or just not being able to balance everything. The photographer went on to say that she now chooses one day each month to document, from morning to night, so that each month she is guaranteed photographs of her family and her life.

I felt challenged and inspired, so I am starting it too! May 1st was my first attempt, as I figured the 1st of each month would be the easiest to remember. I haven't made any rules for myself, but will try to post by mid-month a few of the photos from that day.
